How to Touch Up Paint on Interior Walls

A step-by-step reference for repainting small spots on interior walls using spare paint.

Tools Needed

Small roller (preferred) or brush
Paint tray
220 grit sandpaper
Putty knife

Materials Needed

Spare wall paint, matching the existing color
Spackle, if filling holes or dents
Primer, if needed
Damp cloth and mild soap
Drop cloth or newspaper

Instructions

1.Inspect the area for peeling paint, dents, holes, grease, dirt, or raised bumps and drips — what you find determines how much prep you'll need.

2.Clean the surface with a damp cloth and mild soap, even if it looks clean, then let it dry completely (15–30 minutes). Paint won't adhere properly to dust or grease.

3.If the surface feels rough, is peeling, or has drips or raised edges, lightly sand it with 220 grit sandpaper and wipe off the dust. Skip this if the surface is already smooth and intact.

4.Fill any nail holes, small dents, or tiny cracks with a small amount of spackle. Let it dry 30–60 minutes, then lightly sand smooth and wipe off the dust. Skip this step for a simple scuff mark.

5.Prime the spot if you applied filler, exposed bare drywall, or there's a stain underneath — skip priming for a plain surface scuff over intact paint. Let primer dry 1–2 hours before painting.

6.Stir the paint thoroughly and check for separation. If it's thick latex paint, add a tiny bit of water. Note that old paint may cause a slight color mismatch.

7.Apply light coats with a small roller — best for blending — or a brush, feathering the edges outward so you don't leave a visible square patch. Use a roller if the wall has texture, to help match it.

8.Let it dry before judging the result: typically 30–60 minutes to touch, 2–4 hours before a second coat, and 24 hours to fully cure. Check your paint can's label for exact times.

Blending Reality Check

Older paint may not match perfectly, and matte finishes blend in easier than satin or semi-gloss. If the patch is still visible after it dries, your best option is repainting the entire wall corner-to-corner rather than fighting a visible edge.
